Barbarella

I'm doing an assignment on spoofs at the moment for my Communication Skills class. This brings to mind a certain show on local TV that parodies our local newscasters. Basically, it takes a look at the current situation in Singapore and mocks the fake American accents and weird intonations in the process. It's called "The Noose". You gotta watch it if you wanna hear how Singaporeans with American accents sound like. Too bad though, it's come to the end of the season.

My favourite character from the show has got to be Barbarella the Sarong Party Girl. (An SPG is a Singaporean woman who fancies foreign/white men. They're typically Chinese, with short tongues, and not extremely educated. lulz.) Watch this if you want a laugh. I've included the transcription below in case you can't catch what she's saying. Believe it or not, many people do speak like this in my country.

"Hello everybody, my name is Barbarella! Remember me? Yeah, today I am here to talk about the economy. That's right, you know. Now as we know, the economy is very bad, in fact its terrible. My boyfriend says its like the Great Depression. That's right, it makes me very depressed. Some might even call it devastating.

So, as the president of the SPGs, (the Sarong Party Girls) I feel that I should do my part, too, in saving money and cutting costs. So one idea that I have, that I came up with, is you know, every Saturday? We like to play (the) beach volleyball at Sentosa*. But you know, going to Sentosa, the entrance fee for one person is three dollars**. And then one car going in is also three dollars. So me, and my boyfriend Bill, and two more sisters at the back in the car, umm, that comes up to about... maybe 20 dollars?
Yeah, so it's very expensive in today's economy.

So I have this idea that if we go to the community centre, you know, because in Bishan and Clementi, they have the beach volleyball pit where they have the sand also, so it's like a real beach. Yeah, if you book the whole court it's only three dollars so you can save a lot of money, that's right!

Err.. And the other thing I do is that, you notice I have two surnames here. Very special, right? Yeah, because Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I will go out with Steve, and then Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday I will "chill with Bill". Great idea, right?

Also, as you all know, Barbarella loves Chanel. But these few days, I cannot really buy Chanel. I will buy "This Fashion"***. But hey look, I still look as sexy! Do you agree? .... Thanks."

*a little island part of Singapore. Yes, we have to pay to enter.

***clothes retailer. Half the store costs as much as a Vuitton key ring and I'm not kidding.

Lolz. Google "Alyssa Alano" and you'll find her song on YouTube. She sang Kiss Me (Keys Me) with a fobby accent and lyrics that definitely came from another song.

Lols...funny! Nash, I totally forgot you're in Singapore. I'd love to visit Singapore one day. I have a friend who works at one of the hospitals there. And my boyfriend and his family are going on a trip there March21-27. I was supposed to go with them but my leave was not approved by the company. grrr...what are some of the places they should visit? Have a great weekend!

I forgot you make a living out of accents and stuff. Hey, btw you still owe me cookies right?

aw, justa lucky guess -- she doesn't have the backbone for harvesting lettuce or the endurance for picking grapes

Nashe^ said...

@ Demigoddess: I watched that before! I don't know what she's thinking. LOL!

@ ChinkyGirl: Darn the company! Haha. Oh yeah, our hospitals are full of filipino nurses. Is it the family's first time in Singapore? Gosh, there are so many places, depending on what they like. There's always Orchard Road for shopping, of course! And they should definitely check out Sentosa, too. XD

@ Ray: You still owe me a samich.

Nashe^ said...

@ Uno: Intelligent, of you. Though that would mean half of my country's population (including yours truly) are from the valley, too.

@ Ray: Scuse me! I even got my hair chopped at her place, and you didn't even come by. So please.

@ Izan: Don't act like you never heard about the curse of the short tongues.
