It started when I did a random sketch of a Vera Wang dress on a piece of paper while I was bored. I fell asleep when I couldn't think of anything to add on to it. When I woke up, the piece of paper was gone. I thought the wind blew it away or something, but it didn't matter coz I wasn't planning to go anywhere with that.
I found it the next day by chance, though, when I walked past my sister's study table. I was about to scream and make a big fuss about her taking my stuff (just for drama. It's what big sisters do,) when I saw a few other sketches of the same dress, around my piece of paper. A few other sketches, but with different details. 'My' dress was sleeveless, but the others had sleeves of some sort. 'My' dress had a V-neck, hers had different necklines, like mandarin collars and a boat-neck.
I don't say this very often, but heck I was impressed. While my sketch was only the dress on its own, her sketches came complete with models and footwear. As I found out, she's been flipping through my magazines at night. What a way to get inspired.
And now there are sketches ranging from little suits to evening gowns, all over the house (including one that looks suspiciously like the tweeds from Chanel's 2008 fall collection.) And the thing is, they're all really nice. I would wear those designs if they were made for real, no question. I took some of her work and showed them to a bunch of my friends and they were gawking.
The sister was lying on my bed one night, and when I entered my room she said, "I want to be a designer."
O-Kaaayy. (I was thinking, Did Harry Halim's mom have this conversation, too?)
"And..?"
"And I want to open my own boutique in London! Like Ashley Isham." (He's a Singaporean designer based in London)
"Right."
"Ya. And I'll make shirts, dresses, sunglasses, bags-"
"And SHOES!!!" I yelped. (It just came out.)
"Yes! And shoes! Woohoo!"
I've been thinking that she's just being random but at this point, I realised that she was actually kinda serious, so I opted for another angle:
"Okay, I support you. But you must promise me, if you become famous and all, you must announce that your muse...is ME! And give me all the latest collections."
It's a valid request, right? She never would have started this whole fashion-sketching thing if she hadn't stolen my Vera Wang sketch. Nor gotten interested had it not been for my stack of Glamour, TeenVogue and Smitten.
It's actually hard to be supportive when Singapore's educational system doesn't nurture this sort of thing. All this talk about the government supporting the arts here is bullshit, really. If they were seriously into the arts and stuff, admission into our arts schools won't cost as much as a Dior showroom.
Anyway, the little brat is only twelve. She'll probably have other interests as she grows older (I mean, whatever happened to my dreams of becoming a policewoman?). But in the not-impossible case of her becoming a fash designer, I'll be getting free dresses and shoes! Dude! I've got nothing to lose by supporting this tiny endeavour so I should be all Nike and like, just do it.

yes Nash.. i think quite a bit of MY stuffs would be imported too. Singapore has just too limited choices and we dont get the best.. not really anyway..
